Designing for Foil

Rose Gold Foil American Fork Canyon posterPeople can’t help it; we love shiny things! How better to tap into that love of metallic shine than by finishing your products with foil? Adding foil to your product means you can open up all kinds of possibilities for dynamic, eye-catching designs. Here’s our step-by-step to creating a file for foil embellishments.

Choose Your Foil Finishes

Before you begin setting up a file for your foil, choose which color of foil you need on your product. We currently offer Gold, Silver, and Rose Gold foil on your products. It’s best to emulate this color in your design program so that you can get your design just right.

Separating Your Foil Embellishments

We used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create our projects, so our instructions are for the Adobe suite, but you can use whatever program works best for you!

Create a new layer on your design and call it “Foil.” Select the elements of your design that you want to be printed in foil and copy them into the new layer. This should place them in the same location as on the original design. Remember that unless your foil is creating a texture or embellishing a printed design, you may not want your printed design element under it. Delete your elements from the art layer to prevent issues with alignment or adhering.

Select your elements to be foiled in this new layer and change them to 100% black. The elements must be this exact shade for our MGI machines to read it properly.

Create a Separate File

Export the foil layer as its own, separate PDF file. Make sure that the sizes of both your art file and your foil file are the same.

Then, go to About the Print with your prepared files. On your desired product page, select Yes under “Include foil” and upload your foil PDF. You’ll even be able to see a preview of your foil on your product to make sure it looks just the way you want!

It’s as simple as that! You’ll be able to get foil on any of your printed products just like that.
